The ‘Thursday Night Writers Group’ from Tralee at their open mic’ night.

THE ever growing, ever popular ‘Thursday Night Writers’ group, based here in Tralee, held another of their open mic’ nights in the Abbey Inn last Friday night, to great success.

Situated amongst the plush and cosy environs of the popular bar on Bridge Street, the large group of talented writers, poets, songwriters and screen writers gathered together to showcase their work.

Not the first time that the group has held an open mic’ night, it was an evening designed to allow the writers and other members of the public the chance to come down and talk about their works, read their pieces aloud, receive feedback and just generally enjoy their own small bit of culture on a Friday night.

“The group is really just a place where writers of all forms can get together on a weekly basis to share their work, get writing prompts and meet socially really because writing at times can be a very solitary thing,” said Barbara Lovric, one of the organisers of the night.

“We’re open to all age groups, with people in their late teens to their late sixties coming to the meetings already. It’s a great friendly group of people and we meet every Thursday night from about 7:30 to 9:30 upstairs in the Abbey Inn” she finished.

The group can be found at ‘Thursday Night Writers Tralee’ on Facebook where they provide details of meetings, writing competitions and events coming up both nationally and internationally.

Fenit Drone

Fenit is looking stunning in the new ‘Irish Drone’ footage.

WE’RE pretty blessed here in Kerry to live so close to such beautiful places and amazing scenery, but sometimes we are prone to forgetting just how stunning it all can be.

That’s why when new drone footage of our fair land emerges from the woodwork, we tend to get pretty excited.

This latest edition of scenic shots comes from the team over at ‘The Irish Drone’ YouTube Channel (check them out here) who managed to capture some truly excellent footage of both Fenit Pier, Fenit Lighthouse and the surrounding area on a rare day of wonderful weather.

It’s certainly worth a look, you can check it out in the video below.

Recovery-Haven-1-300x200

The KY Comedy Alternative Club will be raising funds for Recovery Haven.

THE ALWAYS POPULAR ‘KY Comedy Alternative Club’ will be making its triumphant return to the stage this coming Wednesday, February 24th when they perform in the Tatler Jack pub in Killarney.

The ‘Elect Laughter’ event will be one of the clubs first comedy nights of 2016 and judging by some of the excellent performances that were on offer in 2015, it will be certainly guaranteed to draw a few laughs from you.

It will all be in aid of the Recovery Haven Cancer Support House, which provides a large number of much needed services and help to those suffering from cancer along with their families (you can check out the services offered by Recovery Haven on their website here).

The popular, well known and incredibly quick witted comedian Anthony Riordan will be the headline act on the night, and who will be bringing with him a host of other excellent support acts for you to enjoy through out the show.

Everything will kicking off in the bar from around 8:45pm on the night and with entry free and spot prizes to be won on the night too, there’s really no excuse for not popping in and checking out the acts over a quick pint (or two), all for a very worthy cause.

THE NATIONAL LOTTERY has today released the figures showing how many times each county has won the ‘jackpot’ prize since the organisations founding in 1986.

With Dublin of course being the highest on the list with 565 winners, this writer was pleasantly surprised to see Kerry featuring amongst the high rollers with an impressive 36 winners over the last 30 years, placing us 14th overall on the list of winners.

Leitrim is the area that has sold the fewest jackpot winning tickets over the last 30 years, with only 7 winners during this time.

PHOTOS: New Phase Of Renovation Work Begins In Austin Stack Park

Kerry GAA 5

Photos on the Kerry GAA website today show work is well underway on renovations.

A NEW POST on the Kerry GAA website has today shown that work has begun on the second phase of renovations on Tralee’s famous Austin Stack Park.

The first phase of this operation, which took place last year, involved the resurfacing and laying of a new sand based pitch.

The second phase of development involves the following:

• The levelling and concreting of the John Mitchel’s end terracing

• Installation of a new modern floodlighting system

• Removal of the wire perimeter fencing to be replaced with a spectator friendly low wall topped by metal horizontal bars

• The perimeter wall will have safety gates to allow pitch access for spectators in the event of emergency

• Upgrading of the team dugouts to include elevated seating.

Kerry GAA are hopeful that they will have completed these renovations by March 6th when the grounds will re-open to host the Allianz League double bill when Kerry play Wexford in hurling and Donegal in Football.

VIDEO: Kerryman Films Brilliant Irish Version Of The Kardashians

Tadhg Fleming

Tadhg takes us through the Flemings various luxuries, including their state of the art Jacuzzi.

LET’S face it, love them or hate them, the ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ clan and show have become a mainstay feature in our society and (sadly) in most of our day to day lives aswell.

Their lavish and glamorous lifestyle over in the US has left most of us seething with jealousy at one point or another, but now, as we Irish tend to do, Ballymac native Tadhg Fleming has gone and parodied the show and put his own unique country spin on the programme.

Aptly titled ‘Keeping Up with the Flemings’, Tadhg takes us through the various luxuries afforded to the Fleming family, including their state of the art Jacuzzi, one of a kind strip club, football field and their wide array of bushes.

Check out the wonderfully Irish video below.

Keep em’ coming Tadhg.

Kerrys Michael Fassbender Receives Second Oscar Nomination

Michael-Fassbender

Michael Fassbender received his second Oscar nomination today.

KERRY folk will have an upgraded interest in this years 88th Academy Awards ceremony after it was today announced that Killarney’s Michael Fassbender has received an Oscar nomination (his second, by the way) for his role as the titular character in the film Steve Jobs.

Fassbender, who was previously nominated in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category in 2014 for his role as Master Epps in 12 Years A Slave, is up against some stiff competition with Leonardo Di Caprio, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon and Eddie Redmayne also vying for the coveted prize.

This years awards will be taking place on February 28th in California and there will no doubt be a few tired eyes around Killarney and Fossa if it is his name that emerges from that famous golden envelope.

WE’VE said it before and we’ll say it again, the Kerry boy has done alright for himself.

Check out the trailer for Steve Jobs below.

VIDEO: Star Wars Crew And JJ Abrams Talk About Beauty Of Skellig Michael

JJ Abrams Skellig

JJ Abrams was blown away by the beauty of the island.

THE STAR WARS crew along with the films director JJ Abrams have been talking about the practicalities and logistics involved in shooting on Skellig Michael while all the time praising the inherent beauty of the location, in a new video uploaded by Discover Ireland.

The short two-minute clip features interviews with the production crew of the hit seventh installment in the saga and in which they talk about finding the location, their reactions to it and the difficulties of shooting on such a tricky location.

JJ Abrams expresses his shock and awe at the location, at first not able to believe that they were allowed to film on the island.

“I can’t believe they let us shoot there, I mean it was so beautiful”, he says.

“I remember when we all flew in, it was special,” says executive producer Tommy Harper.

Check out the full clip below, which features some absolutely wonderful shots of Skellig Michael.

Star Wars May Not Be Returning To Kerry Anytime Soon

rsz_skellig_michael03js

Skellig Michael plays an important role in the ‘Force Awakens’.

SKELLIG MICHAELS appearance in the latest Star Wars film is set to bring untold benefits to both Kerry and Ireland, but if recent reports are to be believed, our shores might have seen the last of the high profile filming crew for a while.

A report has surfaced today that suggests that the famous monastic settlement site has been recreated on a set in the Pinewood Studios in London, which if true, will spell an end to the local involvement in filming.

While this has not yet been officially confirmed by Disney, the Sunday Times reports that the ‘makingstarwars.net’ website has stated that for those involved in making the film, “filming at Skellig Michael was just too complicated for environmental reasons”.

We won’t know anything for sure until Disney or Lucasfilm choose to issue a statement, we can only wait and see.

What we can be sure of is with ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ grossing over $1 billion so far and with Skellig having a starring (and stunning) role in the story line, it’s certainly not a bad cameo role to have had at all.

Watch this space for further developments.
