My Awkward Life | The Very Impressed Man

On this weeks all new and exciting episode; Darren invents a new word, Fergus buys an ice cream and someone somewhere answers a phone call.

This is My Awkward Life.

Welcome.

Let’s begin.

This is the tale of a man who was very impressed with something.

Plus, me, who just happened to be there when he saw the thing that he was impressed by.

Impressed yet?

My Awkward Life | The Very Impressed Man

You betcha.

Anyway, let’s really begin this time.

Recently, I found myself with a few hours to spare from work, so I arranged to meet up with my recurring character friend; Darren ‘Tactical’ Truslove on his lunch break.

Darren, who is currently interning/in a hotel here in town, was a man on a mission as he set about getting the prints on a reel of film, to quote his exact word, ‘denegatified’ for work.

“Denegitified?” I asked him, “Is that a word? I don’t think it is…?”

“Shhhh, it is now!” he responded with a laugh.

‘Denegitified, Denegitified, Denegitified…’ I repeated over and over in my mind, trying to get my head around both the spelling, knowing that it would bother me the rest of the day if I didn’t.

‘I mean, how would you even go about defining that?’ I thought to myself, my mind now completely off topic as to what Darren was now talking about back in the real world.

*Insert Darren White Noise Here*

‘Could you say; taking the negative out of it maybe? That could work?’ I think.

Somehow in the midst of my strange inner ramblings about the meaning of a made up word; my body, mouth and auto-pilot function had managed to keep up a relatively decent conversation with Darren throughout.

I was in the clear!

(Well, until he reads this story that is; Hi Darren!)

With my apparent good conversational skills intact, we soon reached our destination; a local beauty shop which hides in its bowels, a photo processing centre.

While Darren went up to explain what we needed done for work, I went about trying to look busy and not at all suspicious while standing in the shop on my own.

That’s when I heard it.

Mmmmhmmm, oh yes!”

‘What the heck?’ I thought to myself.

“Oh yes, mmmmhmmm, haha!”

I look around for the source of the noise and see a man, who by the looks of it must be  in his 70’s, staring up and down avidly at a display on the shelf, the contents of which I cannot see clearly from where I am.

“Mmmmhmmm, yes, yes, yes! Mmmmmhmmmm!” this man continues, now bending down to look at the lower parts of the shelf, obviously very impressed with what he was seeing.

‘Do I walk away from him? Do I ask him if he’s okay? I don’t really know the protocol here…’ I ask myself.

‘He could be having a stroke? Are these the symptoms of a stroke? Making noises that sound like you’re impressed but really, you’re having a stroke?’

Right that second though, he gets up and just walks away and disappears around the corner.

‘I have to know what he was looking at!’ I think, making my way casually over to the display; ‘What could have been so interesting that he—‘

Condoms.

Rows of condoms.

The man, who looked to close to being in his mid-70’s and who was making very loud approval noises, was looking at rows and rows of boxes condoms.

I mean, what do you say to that?

Oh, then myself and Darren bought ice-cream.

It All Comes Together For Local Writers At Open Mic’ Night

The ‘Thursday Night Writers Group’ from Tralee at their open mic’ night.

THE ever growing, ever popular ‘Thursday Night Writers’ group, based here in Tralee, held another of their open mic’ nights in the Abbey Inn last Friday night, to great success.

Situated amongst the plush and cosy environs of the popular bar on Bridge Street, the large group of talented writers, poets, songwriters and screen writers gathered together to showcase their work.

Not the first time that the group has held an open mic’ night, it was an evening designed to allow the writers and other members of the public the chance to come down and talk about their works, read their pieces aloud, receive feedback and just generally enjoy their own small bit of culture on a Friday night.

“The group is really just a place where writers of all forms can get together on a weekly basis to share their work, get writing prompts and meet socially really because writing at times can be a very solitary thing,” said Barbara Lovric, one of the organisers of the night.

“We’re open to all age groups, with people in their late teens to their late sixties coming to the meetings already. It’s a great friendly group of people and we meet every Thursday night from about 7:30 to 9:30 upstairs in the Abbey Inn” she finished.

The group can be found at ‘Thursday Night Writers Tralee’ on Facebook where they provide details of meetings, writing competitions and events coming up both nationally and internationally.

Marcus Howlett Is Bringing A New Running Event To Kerry This Year

Marcus 24hr

Marcus Howlett of Run The Kingdom.

THERE’S A NEW running event winging its way towards Kerry in 2016 and judging by the enthusiasm that the organiser, Marcus Howlett, and the running community of Tralee and beyond have shown so far, it promises to be quite the experience.

Marcus, CEO/Founder of the ‘Run The Kingdom’ (RTK) company and Race Director of the Tralee International Marathon, is now delighted to bring the ‘Kerry 24/12/6 Hour Endurance Track Race’ to the Kingdom this September.

The event, which the RTK website states will be one of the ultimate tests of running endurance in Ireland, is already proving incredibly popular with those determined and tough as nails runners, as at the time of writing, the event is already over half way to being sold out.

It will all take place at the An Ríocht track in Castleisland on Saturday September 24th through to Sunday September 25th, will see runners take to the 400m long track where they will complete laps of the track for their chosen period of time, with a 6 hour run, a 12 hour run and a 24 hour run the options available.

“It’s the first time that an event like this will be held in Kerry and the Republic of Ireland (ROI) really, there was one held in Belfast but this will be the first time something like this will come to Kerry,” said Marcus talking to us yesterday.

“Ultra-running is a growing area and personally, I’m into ultra-running myself and the track out at An Ríocht is just perfect for the event,” he continued.

“It’s not just going to be a sporting event, it’s a tourism event aswell. We have runners coming from all over Ireland and from the UK aswell, it’s going to be a great chance for Castleisland to show itself off on a national and international scale,” he continued.

While still a long way off yet, Marcus is hoping that on the day, as many people as possible get down to the track during the event to give support to all the runners, especially those who will be running during the night when it will be most difficult.

“To run for 24 hours non-stop around a 400 metre track, it’s hard enough to run that long out on the road but to do it on a track, that takes mental toughness, they’ll [the runners] have a great sense of achievement. It’s going to be fantastic event,” he finished.

To find out more about the ‘Kerry 24/12/6 Hour Endurance Track Race’, you can head over to the RTK website HERE where everything is layed out in detail.

Tralee’s Xtra-Vision Closes After Liquidator Appointed To Company

dsc_0211

Tralee’s Xtra Vision store in Manor West.

THE Xtra-Vision store in Tralee has today closed its doors for what looks to be the final time after a liquidator was today appointed to the company.

The move is expected to see hundreds of jobs being lost around the country as multiple stores in the chain cease trading nationwide.

The company’s owners, UK-based Hilco Capital, petitioned the court for the appointment of Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton Ireland as the provisional liquidator of Xtra-vision Entertainment Ltd.

The closed store in Manor West cut a dark and lonely figure this afternoon with a sign posted on the door directing anyone with any questions or queries to contact one Grant Thornton.

The letter on the door of Xtra Vision in Manor West today.

The sign reads: “Xtra-Vision ceased trading today 27th January 2016 and entered Provisional Liquidation. Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton was appointed Provisional Liquidator.

“We would be grateful if you return your rentals through the letter box or if you have any enquiries, please contact the offices of Grant Thornton on +353 1 6805 805.”

Over 580 jobs are expected to be lost.

The writing had sadly been on the wall for the chain for a while now it seems with the dwindling movie rental market and a poor Christmas performance the reasons behind the liquidation.

In an RTE report on the matter earlier today, Edward Farrelly, BL for Xtra-vision, said the appointment of a liquidator would result in some of the jobs being saved but it was accepted that most of the company’s employees would have their employment terminated.

He added that any gift vouchers issued by the company would be honoured.

The company operates more than 80 outlets in both the Republic and Northern Ireland, and related company Xtra-vision Ireland Ltd which owns the stock.

Tralee’s Ultan Dillane Named In Six Nations Squad

Ultan Dillane

Ultan Dillane was today named in Joe Schmidt’s Six Nations squad.

TRALEE’S VERY OWN Ultan Dillane will be over the moon this afternoon after it was announced that the former Tralee RFC player and current Connacht lock would be in Joe Schmidt’s 35 man Six Nations squad.

Ultan has been named in the squad for the first two rounds of matches and it will be interesting to see how the towering 6’6 and as yet uncapped 22 year old second rower fares during the tournament.

Ultan was named in the provisional training squad that met in Carlton House recently obviously impressed the coaching staff there, leading to his call up to the full squad.

Ultan has been garnering great reviews for his performances for Connacht over the past year and has now played 18 matches for the team this year, 15 of these appearances coming in the Pro 12.

His sheer strength, imposing figure and technical skill on the field have seen his name spoken of highly amongst the various rugby circles.

The future is certainly looking incredibly bright for Ultan and lets hope he can do himself, his family, Connacht and his former team, Tralee RFC proud when he meets up with the rest of the squad before the first match against Wales on February 7.

Good luck Ultan!

Kerry GAA 5

Photos on the Kerry GAA website today show work is well underway on renovations.

A NEW POST on the Kerry GAA website has today shown that work has begun on the second phase of renovations on Tralee’s famous Austin Stack Park.

The first phase of this operation, which took place last year, involved the resurfacing and laying of a new sand based pitch.

The second phase of development involves the following:

• The levelling and concreting of the John Mitchel’s end terracing

• Installation of a new modern floodlighting system

• Removal of the wire perimeter fencing to be replaced with a spectator friendly low wall topped by metal horizontal bars

• The perimeter wall will have safety gates to allow pitch access for spectators in the event of emergency

• Upgrading of the team dugouts to include elevated seating.

Kerry GAA are hopeful that they will have completed these renovations by March 6th when the grounds will re-open to host the Allianz League double bill when Kerry play Wexford in hurling and Donegal in Football.

Scroll down to see photos of the work from the Kerry GAA website…

Popular Tralee Character Joe Flynn Loses Courageous Battle With Cancer

Joe Flynn

Joe Flynn has this week lost his brave battle with cancer.

TRALEE’S Joe Flynn, who captured and inspired the hearts of the town with his strength, attitude and wonderfully unique views on his battle with cancer, has sadly passed away.

Joe, a resident of Rahoonane here in town came to the attentions of the wider community after he conducted a very personal, inspirational and moving interview with a local paper about his battle with terminal cancer (click here to read).

During this interview he talked about his diagnosis, what he hoped to experience in his final few months and about how he was determined to be out and about and enjoying life as much as he could.

This writer never had the pleasure to meet the man himself, but from the stories I had from my those that did knew him well, you really couldn’t ever meet a nicer person.

After news of his passing spread today, there was one post by ‘The Castle Bar’ that stood out for this writer which I think summed up the man that Joe was:

“[There are} not enough nice words to describe Joe, but simply the nicest person I have ever met and maybe ever will.”

If we can all aspire to be remembered in such a simple, moving and wonderful way as Joe is being remembered today, then I think we’ll doing alright.

This writers thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and anyone lucky enough to have known him.

Reposing at Mc Elligott’s Funeral Home, Tralee on Friday evening from 4.00PM to 6.30PM followed by removal at 6.30PM to Our Lady and St. Brendan’s Parish Church.

Requiem Mass will take place on Saturday at 11AM followed by burial in New Rath Cemetery.

Family flowers only. Donations in lieu to The Palliative Care Unit, Kerry General Hospital.

House strictly private.
